Running Pop-Quiz

by Run Fast Mama on November 4, 2012

Today, Carrie over at Fitness and Frozen Grapes posted a Running Pop-Quiz and invited everyone to play along!  Sounds like fun for a cold Sunday, especially since I only made it a mile this morning on my treadmill and kind of down about it.  My foot swelled after 6 miles yesterday but no pain, there was just a small amount of pain this morning so I decided to play it safe and stop.

1. Fuel:  GU, shot blocks, energy chews, candy, or other?

I have my homemade mixture of around 7 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp molasses and 1 tsp of salt.  I blend this all together with water in one of the bottles I carry with me.  You can see it in the darker bottle behind the plain water.

2. Race length: 5-K, 10-K, half-marathon, marathon, ultra, or other?

Well, my favorite is the half-marathon.  13.1 is just the right distance for me.  5K seems too short and a marathon, well, a tad too long.

3. Workout bottoms:  skirt, capris, pants, running shorts, or other?

My running shorts.  Ink’nBurn and Oiselle are my favorites!  If it is under 40, then I wear running tights under my shorts.  Under 20 then my Brooks winter running pants come out.

4. Sports drink:  Gatorade, Powerade, Cytomax, or stick to water when you run?

Water or Ultima Grape flavor. I’m pretty limited with my allergies but the Ultima has an awesome grape taste, like Kool-Aid only better and without the fake ingredients!

5. Running temperatures:  heat or cold?
I would much rather run in the cold than in the heat ;)  Although, I am pretty proud of myself making it through this summer.  I got up at 5am most mornings to get my miles in before the sun came up and that really helped to keep me cool.
6. Running shoe brands:  Saucony, Mizuno, Nike, Brooks, Asics, or other?
Brooks is my favorite!  If I could run in anything it would be from their Pure line, however, need a bit more support now.  I so want a pair of Ghost with GoreTex for the cold months ahead!
7. Pre-race meal:  oatmeal, bagel, banana, eggs, cereal, or other?
Pre-race meal for me is 2 containers of Chobani yogurt mixed with either Maximized living or Bluebonnet protein powder. For the Chicago Marathon, I did have some oatmeal as well.

8. Rest days:  one per week, two or more per week, never ever, or other?

Usually 2 per week if all is according to schedule. I need some time just to know I can sleep in and my body can recover.  Friday is my favorite rest day!

9. Music:  have to have it or go without it?
If I’m outside, no music.  Inside on the treadmill I have to watch TV, for me that is the Travel Channel or Food TV.
10. Number one reason for running:  stress-relief, endorphins, you love to race, so you can eat all the cupcakes you want, weight-loss, love running, for social reasons or other?
Stress relief.  I am so amazed how much better I feel mentally and physically when I am on a regular run schedule.  I love being outdoors, without the music, just letting my head go where it wants to.
It’s your turn:  share one, a few, or all of your answers!

Somehow I found your blog and have been following it for a few weeks now! Great stuff and I love it! I recently started mine at http://www.runshamelessly.com. Fuel:: Vanilla Bean GU (though I rarely indulge). Pre-Race Meal: None, I cannot run with anything in my stomach, even for long distances. Race Distance: Agree with you on the half marathon, though I do love 5Ks because I can really push myself over the shorter distance. Workout Bottoms: Shorts until I can’t take the cold anymore, then anything that will keep me warm. Sports Drink: Grape Gatorade. Running Temp: Cool (not hot and not cold – 50-60 degress is just right, Running Shoes: Brooks Ghost 5 are awesome, but Saucony Ride are about an ounce lighter and you can feel the difference. Rest Days: 2x per week. Music: Always – I can’t atand to hear myself breathing! #1 Reason for Running: I have 13.1 Reasons on my website….but I do love the Runner’s High.

What do you do to occupy your mind for all those miles without music? You’re not the first person I heard of that has said that, but I can’t really imagine clearing my mind for so long!

I just let it go where it wants to! Lol, sometimes I just repeat the same thing over and over! Can’t handle music as I get sick of the song and change it non stop so I just avoid music and relax!
